Overall I really enjoyed You are the Dadalorian to my Baby Yoda t-shirt and think that it’s full of very open and honest, albeit sometimes cryptic messages that a lot of listeners are going to like. If you like Earl Sweatshirt then I really think you’re going to like Dadalorian and the type of music that he’s making.
You may actually remember Mavi from Earl’s most recent EP Feet of Clay from the track El Toro Combo Meal. While I thought that EP was a bit disappointing, that song was one of my favorites off of it so I’m glad to have checked out this album by Dadalorian. Similar to Earl some of the songs on here are pretty short, but there are a few longer cuts as well.
Additionally You are the Dadalorian to my Baby Yoda t-shirt don’t have a hook, rather you just hear Dadalorian spit a verse which I appreciated. He covers a wide array of topics about his life and his experience but mental health is a common thread where we hear about more light-heartedly as using depression as an excuse to leave a party, to the dark and grittier details on Dadalorian which portrays very relatable feelings for anyone that’s been depressed. Sonically this album also reminds me of Earl since there’s a lot of unconventional beats.
This isn’t music you can dance to, sing along to, or put on at a party. Well you could, but it would be a tough sell. This album is heavily cathartic and is clearly a release of emotions for Dadalorian that he’s dealing with and trying to work through. That’s not to say there aren’t You are the Dadalorian to my Baby Yoda t-shirt or creative beats on here because there are, but the downtrodden, monotone delivery style that Mavi uses places the emphasis heavily on what he’s saying.
This is an album that you’ll want to listen through once, and then immediately replay which is my initial reaction since it’s not possible to catch all he’s saying without a few in depth listens. The outro to You are the Dadalorian to my Baby Yoda t-shirt also provides insight into the title and thus the theme of the album which I don’t have space here to really get into, but nonetheless you should check out this album for sure if you’re an Earl fan, and for sure if you’re a fan of lyrical and personal rap.
Overall I liked this album more than I thought I would, but it’s definitely not my first choice when it comes to music I’d put on for enjoyment. Despite that, I’d still take this album over a lot of the horribly bland trap albums that seem to come out every week.
The main reason why I felt more apathetic towards this record was because I am pretty far from the target audience. While I do like some more experimental and noisier beats from time to time, I’m by no means a metal, punk rock, or noise rock fan which is really what this album is a combination of. It was pretty interesting to check out this album and get a taste of this sub genre of rap, but it just didn’t resonate with me for the most part.
The beats are often very aggressive but can have some more melodic or slower moments. There’s some interesting production on songs like You are the Dadalorian to my Baby Yoda t-shirt longsleeve for example where the beat sounds like something out of a horror movie which was a very cool texture to hear, and it was always nice to hear more interesting and creative beats like that on other songs as well.
The lyrics often match the aggressive beats and are very violent and gruesome albeit very descriptive a lot of the time. I wasn’t terribly compelled on the lyrical front much, but that can also be attributed to song length. A lot of the times right as I was starting to get into a song, it would start to wind down which was disappointing.
