I’m 62. I’ve had an absolute blast in my life. I created Yoda santa seagulls stop it now Christmas t-shirt I wanted. Not perfect by any means but I just went out and had fun. I also have a job I LOVE ,psychology instructor, have no wish to retire, and these students give me joy every single day. I hope you are able to define adulthood by your own terms, not just what others might experience.
No judgment here on anyone who is struggling. I have my own Yoda santa seagulls has been a blast except for the one year when I had the job from hell and I got OUT of there and moved on.
You can choose a career path that allows schedule flexibility and live below your means so you can spend your money on experiences. My dad was a loan officer when I was growing up and stopped keeping office hours when I was a teen. He took weekday business calls out biking on trails and paddling in a canoe. He traveled whenever he wanted. My husband and I were able to achieve something similar with a Yoda santa seagulls stop it now Christmas t-shirt career path. We’re 31 and this year alone have traveled to Morocco, Kauai, Costa Rica, Bali, and are going to Greece next weekend. Choosing not to have children is a big part of our flexibility though.
Live life the way that makes you feel happy and alive. That’s not all there is to life. I walk my dog regularly, meet up with Yoda santa seagulls stop it now Christmas t-shirt for drinks, go to the movies, travel, read and watch Netflix – among other things. And never stop learning and being curious. YOU get to determine what kind of adulthood you want to have. Hopefully you can make a life that includes lots of outside time and time with friends.
No way does adulthood have to suck. Get the best education you can, work to get money to travel and let the adventure begin. Refuse to get stuck in a rut. You don’t have to. You could live anywhere in the world you decide to. Or stay where you are now and create the life you want with fun Santa seagulls stop it now Christmas shirt, art, music, books. Don’t close yourself in. Change your mind about the wonderful independent life of being an adult.
One more comment after reading some of the others. I was lucky. I enjoyed all my jobs. Worked at a hospital and my last years at a university. Loved the students. I also volunteered in my community and at work and had two kids at home. We had a very full and interesting life. Camped on weekends with the kids. Work was a part of life, not all of my life.
So find something you enjoy doing, or at least bring as much joy and creativity to it as you can, and then explore life. And stay off the phone. You can do that when you are old. In between seeing the world. One of my children, about the same Yoda santa seagulls stop it now shirt I think, has much the same thoughts. It is probably the result of a little bit more honesty from us as parents that life is not always fun and excitement. That said, being responsible also means having more freedom of self direction.
